Communiqués Working Group St. Irenaeus
The Johann-Adam-Möhler-Institute and a number of notable experts on Eastern Churches established the Saint Irenaeus international theological working group in 2004 in Paderborn. Thirteen Orthodox and thirteen Catholic theologians from throughout Europe and the USA participate in this group.
The working group focuses on ecclesiological issues. After reviewing the Orthodox-Catholic dialogue during its constitutive meeting, the working group decided to begin by reflecting on the relationship between local churches and the universal church in Orthodox and Catholic ecclesiology. During its subsequent meetings, the working group analysed, on basis of the development in church history, the development of the understanding of primacy as it came to be expressed in the doctrine of the church, and it has also analysed the changes in the practice of primacy as expressed above all in inter-church relations.
